In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

All praise belongs to Allah Who made us among the best of nations ever brought forth for mankind, and sent down to us the best of His Books through the best and most perfect of His Messengers, and He honoured us with this Book, saying:

“Indeed, We have sent down for you (O mankind) a Book (the Qur’an) in which there is Dhikrukum (your reminder or an honour for you i.e. honour for the one who follows the teaching of the Qur’an and acts on its teachings).”  [Q21:10]

And peace and blessing be upon him, whom Allah sent as a Guidance, his household and the companions in general.

Verily, the Arabic Calligraphy is an creative gift and outstanding art. It received great attention from the Arabs and the Muslims. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) encouraged the companions to learn how to write. He adopted different means to achieve that, until the writers of the revelation were more than forty.

After the first generation, the manifestations of service to the Glorious Qur’an took various forms, especially service to its writing which manifested itself in the use of various styles of calligraphic writing with gilding and decoration.

In different periods of time, there appeared a number of seasoned calligraphers with great ability to bring out the excellence and beauty of calligraphy. They wrote mushafs for public and private domains. The most widespread style of writing  used to copy the mushaf was the Kufi style of writing which remained till the fifth century AH. After that time, the Thuluth style of writing replaced the Kufi style and continued until the ninth century. And finally the Naskh style of writing replaced it, and has come to stay.

Despite the emergence of printing and its development, the calligraphers’ handwriting has remained the mainstay of  mushaf writing. This is because of its creative touches and dazzling beauty not yet found in letters used in printing.

In modern times because of the spread of foreign languages and the emergence of computer with its own fonts, Arabic Calligraphy is facing a setback, and is losing the position it occupied in the past. But nonetheless, in spite of all these challenges posed by modern time and its achievements, Arabic Calligraphy still finds those who support it, and encourage the calligraphers by opening schools and institutions, organizing competitions, assemblies and exhibitions for the different styles of calligraphic art and also for the art of decoration.

And among the favours of Allah the Exalted to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is that He guided its government to adopt the Glorious Qur’an as its constitution in all affairs of governance, and to serve the Book of Allah by establishing a special Complex for its printing and distribution.

And in view of the great attention paid to the Glorious Qur’an by the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Endowments, Da’wah and Guidance,
and in recognition of the pioneering role played by King Fahd Glorious Qur’an Printing Complex in this field,  thus becoming an authority in writing the Mushaf, its revision, scrutiny and  printing.
and on account of the importance of conducting an assembly bringing together the world’s renowned calligraphers,
King Fahd Glorious Qur’an Printing Complex in al-Madinah al-Munawwarah represented by its general secretariat is glad to organize a Forum with the name:

King Fahd Glorious Qur’an Printing Complex Forum for the World-Renowned Qur’an Calligraphers
in which will participate a group of those who have had the honour of writing the Glorious Mushaf,  as well as those specializing in the Uthmanic Orthography and other issues of Arabic Calligraphy and the art of Decoration.
