The production of a documentary film on the evolution of the writing of the Glorious Mushaf is among the activities of the Complex’s Forum for the World-renowned Quranic Calligraphers. The film aims at presenting the development of the Qur’anic writing right from the era of the Prophet (صلَّى الله عليه وسلم) till the present times, in the form of a splendid documentary that is based on presenting correct facts and information within thirty minutes, in both Arabic and English accompanied with sign language.
The scenes and events of the film shall be accompanied with shots of hand-written documents from the Glorious Mushafs, the types of Arabic calligraphic styles through different periods of time and numerous geographic locations. This will be in a digital photography with high resolution, an outstanding audio introductory narration and creative professional production.
The film targets at bringing to light some manifestations of Allah’s preservation of His Glorious Book through the ages; to authenticate the origin of the Glorious Mushaf’s writing and its development; presenting the masterpieces of the Islamic civilization in its distinctive features, and the role played by King Fahd Glorious Qur’an Printing Complex in great services to Allah’s Book and its sciences.
The film sheds light on the nature of the Arabic peninsula before the mission of Prophet Muhammad (صلَّى الله عليه وسلم) and the revelation, followed by the writing of the Qur’an during the life time of the Prophet (صلَّى الله عليه وسلم) and how it was written on materials available then; and then in Abu Bakr’s collection in the eleventh year AH, after the appearance of apostasy and the ensuing wars in which a large number of hafizs were killed. After this comes the work of the third Khalifah, Uthman bin Affan (Allah be pleased with him), in the late 24th AH and early 25th AH of transcribing copies of Mushafs and sending them to important cities of the Muslim world at that time.
The film also refers to the stages of development which the Mushaf writing went through, in different periods of time, and what was accomplished in vocalization of its words known as Naqt al-I’rab and the addition of dots to the to differentiate similar letters which is known as Naqt al-I’jam and then the system of dotting and vocalization invented by al-Khalil ibn Ahmad al-Farahidi.
The film highlights one of the various manifestations of artistic creativity in Islamic civilization throughout Islamic history viz., the Arabic Calligraphy which is an outstanding landmark of the Muslim creativity. Calligraphy has a charming touch, and imparts to what the calligrapher writes a great aesthetic value.
The film takes us round the various manifestations of the variegated services rendered to the Glorious Qur’an after the first generation, especially in areas of its writing and the artistic diversity in copying it in different styles of writing, its gliding and decoration.
The film also highlights the efforts of master calligraphers in different epochs who wrote both general and private Mushafs, starting with Mushafs written in the Kufi style of writing up to the fifth century AH; followed by Mushafs written in different styles of writing till the seventh century, and then followed finally by Mushafs written in the Naskh style of writing which has now come to stay.
The film then goes on to present to the viewers the advent of printing; the early editions of the Glorious Mushaf in Europe and the Islamic world; the beginning of printing of the Glorious Mushaf in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1369 AH and when the Mushaf Makkah that was written by the calligrapher Muhammad Tahir al-Kurdi (d. 1400 AH) emerged during the second world war (1939-1945).
The film ends with the endeavours of King Fahd Glorious Qur’an Printing Complex in printing and publishing Mushafs according to the various accepted readings of the Qur’an, and how the calligraphic Quranic writing of the calligrapher Uthman Taha has been widely acclaimed all over the Muslim world. And this fame and acclamation is a result of the high standard of the writing, scrutiny and revision by the specialized scholarly committee, as well as the high technical and artistic facilities available to its printing and get-up.
